Title  Casemix - an AMA perspective
Author  Nelson, B.
Subject  CaseMix
Year  1994
Abstract  The paper addresses issues arising from the introduction of the casemix system one year down the track. The main criticisms outlined are the cuts to rural hospitals and rural specialist services; the linking of hospital medical costs to medical payments to doctors; and threats to cuts in funding for teaching and research. The need for ongoing evaluation and modification of the classification system is also highlighted. It is recommended that the limits of casemix funding must be accepted by governments and that it is important to include bodies such as the Australian Medical Association in decision making. It is also recommended that doctors be more prepared to understand and accept casemix-based funding as it will not go away. Finally, the imperative o f providing protection for those groups who may be above average users such as the poor, the elderly and Aborigines is noted.
